We had a kids craft day last week and everyone had a fun time making a lil love monster. Perfect little kids craft for Valentine’s Day or any day of the year.
they are always a hit with our kids (and us adults) it’s fun to see how each one turns out a little (or a lot) different from the others.

piece of cardboard – 2 1/2″ x 4″
How to make Yarn Monsters
– wrap your yard around the cardboard piece (long-ways) about 150-200 times
– on one side of the cardboard tie a knot around the center of yarn
– flip the cardboard over and cut through the center of the yarn. this is your main hair pom pom.
– take an upside down paper cup and hot glue your pom pom to the top
– make another pom pom by wrapping the yarn (short-ways) around the cardboard about 20-30 times
– this is your “toupee” pom pom. hot glue it on top of the other pom pom
now the fun part. decorating your love monster.
– add your googly eyes
– make some pipe cleaner antennas and hot glue to the top of the head under some yarn hair
– punch or cut out some paper hearts and hot glue to the tops of the antennas
your adorable love monsters will be looking pretty.
we had a couple little boys that were willing to take a long enough break from the video games to create with us. as you could imagine they weren’t interested in anything cutesy. we didn’t let them know that even though their monsters turned out somewhat strange, they were still absolutely adorable. haha.
the girl monsters were not sure what to think about the boy monsters at first…
but in the end, decided that they could all be friends. 🙂
hope you’ll make some lil love monsters with your lil monsters!!
pin this…

Made these with my two nieces and they loved it. One wasn't enough, they had to have two each, and I think there is many more to come 🙂 Didn't find the right size cups here in Norway,so we had to adjust a bit, but that was no problem. Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂

These are charming. We are planning to make them for a classroom party. How many monsters does one skein of yarn make?
Tracy says
Do you have picture of how it looks under them? I placed one on top of the 5 oz. Dixie cup and they seem huge! Not sure and little like yours :/
I’ve have a picture of mine but not sure how to post it here to show off.
Jodie and Jen says
I don’t have a picture of the bottom… I’m sorry. But they are kinda big?? There’s not really a place here to share, but you can tag us on instagram @eighteen25girls or share on our facebook page?? 😉
Sarah says
So cute. Going to have my kiddos work on them soon. I know they will be super excited. Can I ask how you got the yarn to curl on one of the monsters?
Jodie and Jen says
It’s actually just how it came off the roll of yarn. It was towards the inside of the roll where it’s rolled tighter. haha.
Breea says

How many monsters can you get out of one package of yarn? We are thinking of doing these for a class party and are trying to see how much it will cost us in yarn for 24 kids…thanks!!!
Jodie and Jen says
Oh man… it’s been awhile since we made them. I don’t think I could give you an accurate number. I’m sorry!! 🙁
Andrea says
Do you have more pictures of the process rather than the finished products?
Jodie and Jen says
No sorry we don’t.
Brooke says
I’m going to do these for class party…how many do you think I can get from one skein? There are 25 kids.
Thanks for the fun idea!

We made these last night for my daughters classmates for Valentine’s Day. I was getting a bit worried because we needed 18 of them and as we were approaching 11 or so I was questioning whether or not we would have enough yarn! We bought 3 rolls too! But a few pointers..we combined two rolls for some of them so they would have multiple color “hair” so we decreased the amount of “wraps” around the cardboard (lengthwise). Also, one of our spools was a thicker type of yarn so it was less yards. We made them until we ran out of all of our yarn and we got 21 of them. They are also super cute without putting the top Pom Pom on them too if you wanted to use less yarn. Lastly, with my five year old doing it, it was hard to have her keep track of counting how many times she had wrapped it around the cardboard while counting hahahah so there could have maybe been some miscalculations hahaha. Hope this helps everyone trying to figure out how many these make!!
Jodie and Jen says
Thanks so much for sharing Lyndsay!!
Lyndsay S. says
No problem! They are absolutely adorable! Both of my daughters want to keep some as their “pets”…thank goodness we have a few to spare!!
Kristal says
We’re so excited to make these for our valentine party tonight, but we must be missing a step…what are the cups for?
Jodie and Jen says
Sorry, I may be too late but, the yarn sits on top of the cup. Hope you were able to still make them.
